This vibrant painting of Huichol art (Nierika), meticulously crafted with colored yarn on a wooden base, represents a rich cosmogonic and spiritual narrative of the Wixárika culture. The composition is symmetrically organized around a central axis, using an intense chromatic palette where the cool tones of the background contrast with the warm colors of the sacred elements.
The Tree of Life and the Cosmos
At the center of the work rises a Sacred Tree with a dark trunk and bright green foliage, which acts as the axis mundiconnecting the underworld, the earth, and the sky. From its upper branches sprout stylized wind flowers in shades of red and orange, symbolizing spiritual knowledge and the nourishment of the soul. Guarding the crown of the tree are two mythical birds in full flight, light blue in color with outstretched wings, acting as divine messengers between humans and gods.
On the sides of the tree, in the middle section, two emerge undulating serpents brown in color, associated with rain, water, and the fertility of the earth. The background transitions from a cloudy and stormy sky at the top, filled with celestial lightning bolts, into an abyss of deep blue and violet.
The Earthly World and Rituals
In the lower left part, the scene is guarded by a sacred deer (Kauyumari) —the spiritual guide of the Huichol people— emerging from a brown ceremonial vessel or jícara. Its light gray figure evokes purity and ancestral wisdom.
